Iran and U.S. sign deal to reopen Hormuz Strait, ease sanctions

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and U.S. President Donald Trump have digitally signed a memorandum of understanding that paves the way for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and easing some financial sanctions against Iran. The 14-point document is set to be formally signed in Switzerland, initiating a 60-day period for negotiations on the final terms of a broader agreement, including a methodology for neutralizing Iran's enriched uranium stockpiles under IAEA supervision.

In principle, I had a different opinion, but due to the commitment that the esteemed president, as president of the Supreme National Security Council, gave me in his name and in the name of other members, that they would protect the rights of the Iranian nation and the Resistance Front, and since he stated that he would take responsibility for it, I gave permission.

Under the terms of the memorandum, Iran will permit commercial vessels to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route, for a period of 60 days without charge. This move signals a significant de-escalation in regional tensions and aims to restore vital economic lifelines.

Following the announcement, Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei issued a statement. While he expressed a general disagreement with signing a deal with Trump, whom he described as acting out of "desperation," Khamenei stated he had granted permission. This approval was contingent on assurances from President Pezeshkian, who reportedly pledged to take full responsibility for protecting Iran's interests and the "Front of Resistance." Khamenei also noted that the upcoming face-to-face negotiations would not imply acceptance of the adversary's position.

On the path to this stage, the authorities have made many efforts out of compassion and goodwill, and of course, the president of the United States was the one who, out of desperation, used all possible levers for this purpose.

U.S. President Donald Trump also reacted to the development, posting on Truth Social a call for "a beautiful development" through negotiations with Iran. He further expressed expectations for a "complete ceasefire on all fronts, including Lebanon, Hezbollah, and Israel." The U.S. military's Central Command confirmed the lifting of the blockade on Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz, marking a concrete step in the implementation of the agreement.
