Iran executes man accused of aiding Israel and U.S. during protests

Iran executed Majid Adineh on Sunday after he was convicted of collaborating with Israel and the United States, according to the Iranian judiciary's Mizan Online news website. Adineh was found guilty of intentional arson, gathering, and collusion with the intent to commit crimes against the country's internal security.

The court sentenced Adineh to death and ordered the confiscation of all his assets. Despite an appeal, the sentence was upheld, and the execution was carried out on Sunday morning. Adineh and another suspect were arrested on January 9 in Alborz province, west of Tehran. Authorities reported finding a revolver, ammunition, stun guns, tear gas grenades, a chainsaw, and gasoline on their persons.

The arrests and execution occurred during a period of heightened anti-government sentiment in Iran, which peaked around January 8-9. These protests, initially sparked by rising living costs, evolved into a broader national movement of dissent. Iranian authorities claimed over 3,000 people died as a result of the unrest, attributing the violence to "terrorist acts" instigated by the U.S. and Israel.

Human rights organizations have noted a significant increase in executions in Iran, particularly since the start of the conflict in the Middle East on February 28. Last year, Iran executed at least 1,639 people, a record high since 1989, according to Iran Human Rights and ECPM. Amnesty International ranks Iran as the second-highest country for executions globally, trailing only China.
