Iran executes man over links to nationwide protests

Iran has executed Abbas Akbari, who was convicted of carrying out armed attacks during the nationwide anti-government protests that occurred earlier this year. The judiciary announced the execution on Monday, identifying Akbari as "one of the armed leaders" involved in unrest in the central province of Isfahan.

He was also accused of attacking the governorate building, security establishments, and health centers in the town of Nain, located in Isfahan province. The charges against him included "moharebeh", waging war against God, as well as destruction of public property with the intent to confront the system and disrupt public order and national security.

The Supreme Court upheld Akbari's death sentence following his appeal, and the execution took place on Monday morning. This execution follows another on Sunday, where a man convicted of espionage was put to death. Rights groups, including Amnesty International, note that Iran carries out the second-highest number of executions worldwide, trailing only China.
