Iran Frees US-Iranian Citizen Dena Karari After Nearly Two Years of Detention

Dena Karari, an Iranian-American citizen, has been freed from detention in Iran after nearly two years, her international human rights lawyer Jared Genser confirmed. Karari was reportedly held on what Genser described as "bogus charges" of collaboration with a hostile state and espionage.

I am beyond excited to report that my client Dena Karari, a US-Iranian citizen, who has been trapped in Iran on bogus charges of collaboration with a hostile state and espionage, is now safely out of Iran and on her way back to the United States.

According to her lawyer, Karari's detention stemmed from her operation of the non-profit Children of Mehr Foundation, which provided assistance to impoverished children in Iran through private donations. Despite facing interrogation dozens of times by Iran's Ministry of Intelligence and Security and being subjected to a coercive exit ban, she was never physically detained but endured significant physical and psychological hardship.

U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed the news of Karari's release, calling it a "gesture of goodwill" from Iran. He confirmed that she is safely outside Iran and in good condition. The U.S. expressed its appreciation for this act.

Karari's release comes amid ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Iran. Iran is currently holding several Western nationals, and is accused of using them as bargaining chips in international negotiations. Genser used the occasion to call on Iran to release all other "wrongly imprisoned Americans" and political prisoners held within the country.
