Iran, Houthis strike tankers as US bombing continues: What’s the latest?

The United States continued its sustained aerial campaign against Iran for a twelfth consecutive night early Thursday, striking a range of military targets. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that the strikes concluded at 02:30 GMT and targeted Iranian military installations, including maritime capabilities, missile and drone storage facilities, coastal surveillance sites, and air defense assets.

In response, Iran launched retaliatory strikes against U.S. assets in Kuwait and Jordan. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed to have "attacked and destroyed a large warehouse of military equipment, a Patriot missile defense system, and a hangar of American MQ9 drones" at Ali Al Salem airbase in Kuwait. The IRGC asserted that the U.S., not Iran, had violated Kuwait's territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Two people were killed in the attack, the deputy governor of Iran’s Khuzestan province told the state broadcaster IRIB on Thursday. Local media also reported that 11 people were injured.

Further claims from the IRGC indicated strikes on U.S. assets in Jordan, stating they "destroyed a radar of the American THAAD missile defense system with lightning strikes." The IRGC also claimed to have hit a Patriot system and a C-RAM system. Earlier, an explosion set a tanker ablaze in the Strait of Hormuz after it attempted to navigate the southern route off the coast of Oman, with the IRGC stating it had attacked the tanker.

Reports from Iran indicated that U.S. missiles struck an area near a passenger terminal in Shalamcheh, a western city close to the Iraqi border, killing two people and injuring eleven, according to the deputy governor of Iran's Khuzestan province. Overnight strikes reportedly targeted at least three cities in the southwestern Khuzestan province, including Ramshir, where an asphalt facility was hit. Explosions were also heard in Sirik, Hormozgan province, and a power substation near the Bushehr nuclear power plant experienced a few hours of outage following an overnight attack. The Tasnim news agency reported a U.S. missile hit a location on the outskirts of Andimeshk, and ISNA news agency reported that two naval search and rescue vessels were seriously damaged in a U.S. attack on Iran’s Hormozgan.
