Iran's attack on Kurdistan may signal new phase in Tehran's regional drone warfare - analysis

Iran carried out a drone attack on the office of the Kurdistan Regional Government's prime minister on August 17, employing new jet-powered drones, according to the autonomous KRG government. Masrour Barzani, the KRG prime minister, stated on X/Twitter that his personal office and the residence of the President of the Parastin Agency were targeted. He strongly condemned the aggressions as a "dangerous escalation and a direct threat to the security and stability of the region."

Barzani affirmed that such attacks would not deter the KRG from continuing its duties and protecting its citizens. The attack occurred a day after reports suggested that KRG President Nechirvan Barzani had been identified by the US as a potential intermediary for diplomacy with Iran. Both Nechirvan and Masrour Barzani are related and hail from the influential Barzani family, which leads the KDP party, the largest Kurdish party in Iraq.

The Kurdistan Region has faced over 1,000 attacks from Iran and its proxies since the US and Israeli strikes on Iran in February. The targeting of Masrour Barzani's office, following an earlier attack on Nechirvan Barzani's residence in March, illustrates Iran's willingness to cross red lines and escalate its actions. Iran appears intent on inflaming the region and expanding the conflict to new fronts, with Iraq serving as one such theater.

Iranian-backed militias have also attacked Saudi Arabia from Iraq in the past month. Despite US pressure on Iraq to rein in and disarm these militias, disarmament initiatives in other regions involving Iranian-backed groups have seen limited success. The KRG Counter-Terrorism Unit confirmed that two explosives-laden Hadid-110 drones were launched from Iran, targeting the prime minister's office and the home of the head of the KRG Security and Intelligence Agency. The Hadid 110 drone was unveiled in February 2025.
