Iran’s Pezeshkian to Meet Modi at SCO Summit in Kyrgyzstan

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bishkek during a two-day visit for meetings of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and the SCO Plus grouping.

Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency said Pezeshkian left Tehran to attend and address the summit. He is expected to hold bilateral meetings with Modi, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and the presidents of Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan.

Pezeshkian will also attend the official opening ceremony of the sixth World Nomad Games at the invitation of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov. Modi arrived in Bishkek on Sunday after a state visit to Uzbekistan and is attending the 26th SCO Summit at Japarov’s invitation.

This meeting is very important and most of the leaders of the region will be present in it. In a situation where some international institutions are seeking to create a unified space in the world, this meeting is considered a symbol of the existence of diverse and independent voices in the global arena

Before leaving Tehran, Pezeshkian said Iran does not seek war but would respond “with strength and determination” to any aggression. He described regional instability as harmful to all countries and called for greater convergence to advance economic and security objectives.

Pezeshkian said the summit was important because many regional leaders would attend. He presented it as a gathering of “diverse and independent voices” and linked cooperation among the region’s countries to their shared history, peace, security, economic development and civilization.
