Iran says it has agreed Strait of Hormuz shipping route with Oman

Iran announced it has reached an agreement with Oman on a shipping route through the critical Strait of Hormuz. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei described the deal as being in its "final stages" but provided no further details.

The geographical coordinates of the route had been agreed with Oman.

However, Baqaei cautioned that the agreement with Oman alone does not guarantee safe passage. He asserted that security in the strait remains compromised by the United States' blockade of Iranian ports. Neither the US nor Oman has yet commented on the reported agreement.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas typically flows, has seen significantly reduced traffic since late February following alleged attacks by the US and Israel on Iran. This disruption has led to wild fluctuations in global oil prices. US President Donald Trump recently warned Iran that it would face severe consequences if the strait did not reopen soon.

The factors making the Strait of Hormuz insecure still exist on the part of the United States, particularly the naval blockade and other aggressive and threatening actions against Iran and its interests.

Senior US officials had indicated progress in talks that could potentially allow shipments to resume later this week. However, Iran has consistently maintained that it is not negotiating with the US and has no intention of doing so. The reopening of the strait has been a central point in discussions between the two nations and mediators. Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi later told the official Irna news agency that the new route would be temporary, possibly lasting two to four months.
