Iran says it hits US military targets in Gulf, buries slain leader Khamenei

Iran launched attacks targeting US military infrastructure in Gulf states on Thursday, escalating tensions after recent US strikes on Iranian provinces and further undermining a three-week-old ceasefire. The assaults followed multiple explosions reported across southern Iran, including near the Bushehr nuclear plant.

These actions transpired as Iran conducted funeral processions for its slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a US airstrike on February 28, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict that has claimed thousands of lives and disrupted global energy supplies. The attacks on Qatari and Saudi shipping vessels earlier in the week had already prompted US President Donald Trump to declare the truce "over."

While a US official stated there had been no American strikes in recent hours, Iran's Revolutionary Guards Navy issued a stern warning. They asserted that any further US intervention in redirecting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz would draw a "crushing response." The Guards accused the US of disrupting the waterway's reopening and claimed that Iranian supervision had restored transit to about 50% of pre-war levels.

The US military, however, maintained its strikes were aimed at keeping the strait open, citing Iran's alleged attacks on three tankers. The US reported facilitating the transit of over 800 commercial vessels and 380 million barrels of crude oil through the strait since early May, asserting that Iran does not control the waterway. Oil prices saw a slight decrease on Thursday after initial spikes due to concerns over global supply disruptions.
