Iran says it is close to an agreement on Hormuz with the Sultanate of Oman

Iran announced Sunday that it is nearing an agreement with Oman concerning the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for global energy trade that Iran has kept closed since early July amid renewed hostilities with the United States. The closure has significantly disrupted the global economy.

According to Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaïl Baghaï, the two nations are discussing a shipping route that respects the sovereign rights and national interests of both countries. He stated, "We are on the verge of reaching an agreement on a route acceptable to both parties - neither the northern route nor the southern route - respecting the sovereign rights of each country and guaranteeing our national interests and security."

Baghaï clarified that this potential Iran-Oman accord would be independent of U.S. demands for the strait's reopening. He asserted that the waterway's closure is a direct consequence of "all the hostile measures" taken by Washington. The Strait of Hormuz, which previously handled a fifth of the world's seaborne oil trade, was briefly reopened in mid-June after a memorandum of understanding between Iran and the U.S., but was subsequently re-closed with the recent escalation of clashes.

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump had announced a pause in American strikes, calling for the "complete and total" reopening of the strait. He indicated that major outlines for an agreement had been reached, though he provided no further details. Trump had previously threatened massive strikes against Iran, including the potential annihilation of "an entire civilization," in response to the Strait of Hormuz blockade.
