Iran Strikes Back, Launches Ballistic Missiles at US Forces in Jordan

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it launched ballistic missiles at two US military bases in Jordan after American forces struck rocket-launch positions on Larak Island.

The reported targets were King Hussein Air Base and Al-Azraq Air Base. The IRGC described the attacks as retaliation for the US operation on Aug. 30, which targeted two rocket-launch sites. The strike marked the first US attack on Iran since July 29, according to the report.

The exchange followed warnings from US President Donald Trump about naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump said last week that all mines in international waters of the strait had been detonated or removed. He also said Iran had been told that any vessel attempting to lay new mines would be destroyed.

David Des Roches, a former US Defense Department director for Arabian Peninsula affairs, told Al Jazeera that Iran may have fired a Fajr-5 multiple rocket system toward shipping lanes in the strait. He said the rockets could have been used in connection with mine-laying in those waters, describing the US action as a response to what the Trump administration had warned it would target.
