Iran to hold six-day funeral for former Supreme Leader Khamenei; successor's appearance eyed

Iran is preparing for a six-day funeral and memorial service for its former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, beginning next month. The proceedings are scheduled to commence on the 4th of the month at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla in Tehran, with farewell ceremonies for the "martyred Imam" and his family. The schedule includes processions in Tehran and Qom on the 6th and 7th, culminating in the burial at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad on the 9th.

Khamenei died on February 28, the first day of the Iran-US war, during a large-scale bombing of Tehran coordinated by the US and Israel. His funeral proceedings are commencing 126 days after his death, a delay attributed to concerns over potential US airstrikes. The funeral arrangements appear to have been finalized following a recent preliminary agreement between Iran and the US on a ceasefire memorandum of understanding (MOU).

The official website of the former Supreme Leader announced that the funeral and memorial committee has invited Iranians, global supporters, and Islamic followers to attend the ceremonies. The event will bid farewell to Khamenei, who was a leader of the Islamic Revolution, along with his family members who also perished in the attack.

Significant attention is also being given to the potential appearance of Mojtaba Khamenei, who unexpectedly became Iran's third Supreme Leader following his father's death. Mojtaba was reportedly injured alongside his father during the large-scale US and Israeli airstrikes. While Mojtaba is said to have approved the tentative ceasefire MOU between Iran and the US, he has not been seen publicly since the war concluded.
