Iran-War: Explosions in Tehran - Air Defense Deployed

Air defense systems were activated in Iran's capital, Tehran, overnight, with reports of dull explosions heard in the northeastern part of the metropolis. Iranian state media confirmed anti-aircraft fire across several districts of the city, home to approximately 15 million people. The activity subsided shortly after.

Simultaneously, the U.S. military announced a new series of strikes targeting military objectives within Iran. The U.S. Central Command (Centcom) stated on platform X that these attacks aim to degrade Iran's capability to attack merchant ships in the vital Strait of Hormuz. This marks the eleventh consecutive night of U.S. strikes against the Islamic Republic, though Centcom did not disclose the specific targets of these latest attacks.

The overnight events in Tehran could signal a new phase of escalation in the conflict. The last reported attacks on the capital occurred in early June, over a month prior. Previously, Israeli air force strikes targeted sites in Tehran in response to Iranian missile attacks. The conflict reignited in early July after Iranian forces fired on merchant vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting U.S. airstrikes on Iran's southern coast.

U.S. President Donald Trump declared an end to the ceasefire agreement, initially established in April and repeatedly violated, as well as a framework agreement negotiated in mid-June. Tehran also indicated it no longer considers itself bound by the preliminary declaration of intent. The conflict between Israel and the U.S. against Iran began in late February, involving nearly 40 days of aerial attacks that resulted in the targeted killing of numerous influential generals and top politicians, including Iran's supreme leader, Khamenei, on the first day of the war. Iran's armed forces responded with significant missile attacks on U.S. targets in the Gulf region.
