Iran War Support Dwindles in U.S. to One in Three Backers

Public support for the U.S. war against Iran has dwindled to just one in three Americans, marking the lowest approval rating since the conflict began six months ago. The latest poll, conducted by Reuters and Ipsos between July 24-26, also shows President Donald Trump's job approval rating increasing by 3 points to 37%, a rebound after hitting a low point in his second term last month.

A substantial 69% of respondents feel Trump has not clearly explained the U.S. military intervention's goals in Iran. This concern is echoed by approximately 40% of Republican voters. Trump has articulated various objectives, including supporting regime change, eliminating Iran's missile capabilities, and preventing it from acquiring nuclear weapons, though Iran consistently denies pursuing nuclear arms.

White House spokesperson Olivia Wales stated that Trump's decisions are not based on "volatile public opinion polls," asserting that the president is acting to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Historically, public support for U.S. military engagements has been higher; for instance, the Iraq War in 2003 saw about 70% support in its early months, and the Afghanistan War after 9/11 had around 90% support initially.

The declining public sentiment towards the war is seen as a potential challenge for Trump and the Republican Party as they approach the midterm elections in November, where control of Congress will be decided. Independent voters are leaning towards Democratic candidates, particularly on economic policy. The conflict has resulted in 18 U.S. military deaths and thousands of casualties in Iran and Lebanon, with rising fuel prices in the U.S. directly impacting household budgets.
