Iran Warns US, Israel Against Provocation During Khamenei Funeral

Iran has issued a stern warning to the United States and Israel, vowing retaliation if they engage in any provocative actions during the mourning period for the former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The announcement came from Commander Ali Abdollahi of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' joint operations command.

The martyrdom of the former Supreme Leader is a great sorrow for the Islamic community.

Abdollahi declared that any "miscalculation" by the U.S., Israel, or their accomplices would lead to a "harsh and regrettable response." He emphasized the need for external parties to refrain from actions that could provoke such a reaction, particularly during the sensitive transition period following Khamenei's death. The statement also underscored absolute obedience to the directives of Khamenei's son, Mojtaba, who has been designated as the new Supreme Leader.

Analysts interpret this declaration as an effort to consolidate the legitimacy of the new leadership and signal a zero-tolerance policy towards any military actions, however minor, during the funeral period. The funeral ceremonies are slated to take place in Tehran and the holy city of Qom, with the main procession beginning on July 4th and concluding with the burial in Mashhad on July 9th. Notably, the start of the funeral coincides with the U.S. Independence Day.
