Iranian Missile Attack on US Base in Kuwait Injures Five, Destroys Drones; Peace Deal Imperiled

A significant escalation in the Middle East has put diplomatic efforts in jeopardy after Iran launched a short-range ballistic missile targeting the U.S. air base Ali Al Salem in Kuwait. The attack, which involved a Fateh-110 missile, caused injuries to five individuals and inflicted tens of millions of dollars in material damage, threatening an imminent peace agreement.

According to military and intelligence sources, the missile, capable of carrying a 500-kilogram warhead, was intercepted by Kuwaiti air defense systems. However, incandescent debris and fragments rained down on the base perimeter. Five people, including U.S. military personnel and civilian contractors, sustained injuries. Medical sources reported the injuries were minor and the individuals are out of danger.

The material damage, however, was severe. An MQ-9 Reaper attack and reconnaissance drone was completely destroyed by the blast and falling debris. A second drone of the same type suffered major structural and electronic damage from shrapnel. The financial impact is substantial, as a single MQ-9 Reaper system costs approximately $30 million, pushing the total losses from this incident to over $60 million.

This kinetic attack directly impacts a strategic memorandum of understanding announced just 24 hours prior by U.S. President Donald Trump. The agreement, a result of intense negotiations through regional intermediaries, aimed to end the active phase of the conflict. It included a 60-day extension of a regional ceasefire established on April 7, intended to provide time for finding lasting solutions to the nuclear and maritime transport crises. The conflict, which began on February 28, has generated a global energy crisis after Iran blocked vital shipping routes.
