Iranian women, girls die by suicide, honor killing after Telegram sextortion channel

Teenage girls and young women in Iran have reportedly died by suicide or in honor killings following the leak of their photos on a Telegram channel, which accused them of sexual misconduct. Iranian media and legal organizations report that over the past week, two girls in Lorestan province ended their lives after their images were published without consent. Several others have reportedly attempted suicide.

Weeks prior, a 16-year-old girl and a 20-year-old woman reportedly died by suicide in separate incidents linked to the channel. An informed source told IranWire that one of the photos used was an ordinary image taken from the victim's Instagram page. The channel's administrators allegedly demanded payment to remove the posts, leading to extortion attempts across provinces like Lorestan, Kermanshah, and West Azerbaijan.

Beyond suicides and suicide attempts, the channel's actions have had devastating consequences. Sharq newspaper reported at least one honor killing linked to the channel, where a young girl was allegedly killed by her father due to a post. Other reported impacts include job loss, expulsion from home, and the cancellation of engagements, demonstrating the severe psychological harm inflicted by cyber violence, social stigma, and cultural pressures related to honor.

Legal advocacy network Dadbaan stated that such cases illustrate how cyber violence combined with social stigma and cultural pressures can inflict severe harm, especially on teenagers. They emphasized the need for criminal prosecution, psychological support, digital literacy education, and combating victim-blaming. IranWire cited an informed source suggesting that student groups were targeted, but the situation escalated as individuals used the channel for personal grudges, posting offensive captions alongside photos of others' children.
