Iraola's new Liverpool snatched a late draw with a penalty against Newcastle

The new-look Liverpool, managed by Andoni Iraola, snatched a dramatic 2-2 draw away at Newcastle on Sunday, securing the equalizer with a penalty in the dying moments of their Premier League opener.

The crucial spot-kick, awarded for a foul on Spanish newcomer Víctor Muñoz by Newcastle defender Lewis Hall, was confidently converted by Hungarian Dominik Szoboszlai in the 90+9th minute. This late goal salvaged a point for Liverpool after they had trailed twice.

Newcastle had taken the lead through Hungarian Milos Kerkez in the 50th minute, only for Liverpool's Cody Gakpo to equalize three minutes later. Joe Willock then put Newcastle back in front in the 57th minute, setting the stage for Szoboszlai's late heroics.

While a draw may seem fair given Liverpool's dominance, the result is particularly harsh for Newcastle, who conceded in the final seconds. Both clubs are undergoing significant rebuilding processes following the departures of key players over the summer. Newcastle lost Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Anthony Gordon, while Liverpool saw the exits of Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konaté, and Andy Robertson, among others.

Notably, both Newcastle and Liverpool paid tribute to English football legend Kevin Keegan, who passed away in July at the age of 75 and is revered by both clubs.
