Islamabad ranks 83rd globally in public safety

Islamabad has achieved a notable position in a global safety index, ranking 83rd among 401 cities worldwide. The capital police announced this achievement, emphasizing that Islamabad now ranks ahead of major international cities such as London, Moscow, Toronto, Glasgow, and Istanbul.

The police attributed this ranking to significant improvements in crime detection and prevention. This year, the Islamabad police reported a 100% detection rate for homicide cases, successfully apprehending all individuals involved. Notable cases resolved include the murders of Group Captain Asim Tariq and a triple homicide in H-9, along with the resolution of a bank robbery and the safe recovery of a kidnapped foreign child.

Furthermore, the capital experienced a substantial 27% decrease in property crime in 2026 compared to the previous year, with 1,499 fewer incidents reported. Declines were also observed in other major crimes, including robbery, dacoity, murder, and vehicle theft. These improvements are bolstered by the establishment of specialized units like the SWAT and Delta Force for counter-terrorism and emergency response, and a Margalla Trail Patrol Unit to enhance tourist safety.

To further bolster security, the Islamabad police have implemented several new initiatives. These include a K-9 unit for detecting explosives, a Special Protection Unit (SPU) for the security of Chinese nationals, and the renovation of police stations under the Special Initiative Police Station (SIPS) project. Additionally, technology plays a key role, with upgrades to Safe City Islamabad, the integration of an AI-based hunch lab, and a cybersecurity digital sophistication project. The police also reported arresting 1,144 suspects for drug peddling and apprehending over 10,000 individuals in various crime control operations.
