Ismael Blanco takes charge of Técnico Universitario to battle relegation

Ismael Blanco, a familiar name to Barcelona SC fans, has taken on the challenge of coaching Técnico Universitario, a team in a precarious position in Ecuador's Liga Pro. The 43-year-old Argentine, who previously played for Barcelona SC from 2014 to 2016, led his first training session with the club on August 17.

Blanco's mission is to steer 'El Rodillo Rojo' away from the relegation zone. Técnico Universitario currently occupies the antepenultimate spot in the league table with 26 points. He will be supported by a new technical staff, including fellow Argentine Nelson Benítez as assistant coach, Rodrigo Cariaga as physical trainer, and Ecuadorian Héctor Lautaro Chiriboga as goalkeeping coach. Diego Armas also returns to the team to play under Blanco.

Blanco's history with Barcelona SC is notable. He joined in mid-2014 and had a strong start, scoring 14 goals in 22 matches in his first season. He even had to play as a goalkeeper during one game after both regular keepers were sent off. He won the second stage of the 2014 Ecuadorian championship with Barcelona SC, though they lost the final. Blanco scored 30 goals in his tenure before leaving for Colón of Argentina in August 2016. He now embarks on a new chapter as a coach, with a long-term dream of one day managing Barcelona SC.
