Ismail Lasim Sworn In as Negri Sembilan Chief Minister, Declares State Holiday

Ismail Lasim, a seasoned UMNO politician, officially assumed the role of chief minister for Negri Sembilan on August 2. The 67-year-old leader took his oath before the state ruler, Yang di-Pertuan Besar Muhriz Munawir, at Istana Besar Seri Menanti.

Lasim, who previously held the education and human capital portfolio in the state government and is the Kuala Pilah UMNO chief, secured victory in the recent state election. He defeated rivals Mohd Aidil Abdullah of Pakatan Harapan and Mohd Zuhaimi Md Yusof of Bersatu in a three-cornered contest, garnering 6,907 votes.

In a gesture of gratitude, the newly appointed chief minister declared August 3 a state holiday. Lasim stated that this decision, made with the consent of the state ruler, was to recognize the hard work and participation of everyone involved in the recent election campaign.

The state polls saw a significant outcome for the coalition parties. Barisan Nasional secured a dominant 18 seats, with UMNO winning 16 and the Malaysian Chinese Association taking two. Perikatan Nasional secured seven seats, comprising four from Parti Islam Se-Malaysia and three from Parti Wawasan Negara. Pakatan Harapan secured 11 seats, with the Democratic Action Party winning nine and Parti Keadilan Rakyat taking the remaining two.
