Israel blocks West Bank village after clash kills six

Israeli forces arrested dozens of Palestinians in a village near Nablus on the occupied West Bank, a day after a violent clash between Jewish settlers and Palestinian residents resulted in the deaths of four Palestinians and two Israelis.

Palestinian authorities stated that armed settlers initiated the confrontation by attacking villagers in Tal, southwest of Nablus. The Israeli military initially described the settlers involved as hikers but later acknowledged some were armed, reporting that both sides opened fire. Social media footage depicted a chaotic scene with villagers and a large group of Israelis, some armed, and soldiers present. The footage also appeared to show at least two Israelis striking Palestinians, one of whom was killed after disarming an assailant.

Valid Zidan, head of the local council in Tal, asserted that Jewish settlers instigated the conflict, claiming they were not following any designated route but intended to attack homes. "The villagers did not seek conflict. They were simply defending their homes," Zidan said, adding that around 70 villagers were questioned, with 10 released as searches continued.

Israeli military chief Gen. Eyal Zamir declared the operation's objective was to "counter terrorism, ensure the security of Israeli civilians, and prevent further escalation." Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged retaliation, including the demolition of a family home of one of the involved Palestinians and accelerating approvals for new settlements for Jewish settlers in the area.
