Far-right Israeli politicians are pushing to dismantle Palestinian authority in the occupied West Bank, with Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announcing the annulment of the Hebron Accords. This move strips Palestinian authorities of planning and construction powers at a shrine in the city.

In parallel, Likud Minister Nir Barkat has promoted a plan for five Hebron residents to establish an independent emirate. These residents, presented at a Knesset hearing, proposed assuming local control through tribal leadership and seeking to break away from the Palestinian Authority. They also presented demands to Israeli forces, including refraining from actions against them and reducing arrests.

The emirate model is “the future of the West Bank” and the most significant alternative offered to the Palestinian Authority so far.

Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli voiced strong support for the emirate model, calling it "the future of the West Bank" and a viable alternative to the Palestinian Authority, which the Israeli government aims to dismantle. The 1997 Hebron Agreement had divided the city into zones under Palestinian and Israeli control, but Palestinians previously held planning authority for the entire city.
