Israel carries out fresh strikes on Lebanon, killing 12

At least 12 people, including two children, were killed in Israeli strikes on the southern Lebanese town of Kfar Rumman, one of the deadliest days of bombardment in Lebanon in recent weeks. The attacks have raised fears of a renewed Israeli campaign against Hezbollah despite a June ceasefire intended to halt the fighting.

Lebanon’s health ministry said 11 people, including two children and four women, died when a residential building was struck. A separate Israeli drone strike on a civilian vehicle killed a medic and wounded two others, the ministry said. The strikes came without an online evacuation warning from the Israeli military.

Reuters reporters at the scene saw children’s schoolbooks scattered among concrete rubble. Rescue workers used heavy machinery to search for bodies throughout the morning. Locals said eight-year-old Mustafa Farhat lost his grandparents and mother in the strike, while rescuers continued searching for his father as the boy received treatment for his wounds.

Mona Farhat, a relative, said the family home had been hit as children prepared for school. “What did they target? What is the goal they are targeting? Do they want us to leave our land? They are mistaken,” she told Reuters at the hospital.

The Israeli military said it struck people seen transferring weapons in the area and had taken steps to limit harm to uninvolved people, including using precise munitions and aerial surveillance. It said it was reviewing reports that civilians had been harmed. Israel also said Hezbollah launched two explosive drones toward Israeli troops near the Ali al-Taher ridge, where it believes the group built an underground military complex. Hezbollah has not commented, and Reuters could not independently confirm the military situation there.
