Israel, Lebanon, US weigh international verification for Hezbollah disarmament

Israel, Lebanon, and the United States are engaged in discussions to determine which international partners will oversee the verification of Hezbollah's disarmament. The focus is on ensuring that areas occupied by the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) during the pilot phase of the disarmament process are free of Hezbollah operatives and weaponry. Italy is reportedly among the countries being considered for this crucial verification role.

These deliberations follow the conclusion of initial U.S.-backed talks held in Rome between Israeli and Lebanese officials. During these negotiations, Lebanese Army Commander Gen. Rodolphe Haykal met with Italy's Joint Operations Command chief, Lt.-Gen. Giovanni Maria Iannucci, to discuss regional security and potential support for the LAF. The Lebanese Army statement indicated discussions covered "the overall situation, recent developments, ways to support the Lebanese Army in light of the challenges it faces, and the available options for the period following the end of UNIFIL's mission."

Initially, Israel insisted on its right to enter LAF-secured areas to conduct final confirmation of disarmament. However, following strong opposition from the Lebanese government, discussions shifted towards involving a third country or a group of countries in the verification process. Both Israel and the United States are firmly against extending the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which is set to expire at the end of the year, and do not want the peacekeeping force to be responsible for the final on-the-ground verification.

Sources familiar with the talks indicate that no final decision has been made, and several alternatives are still under consideration. The outcome of these discussions will be critical in shaping the future security landscape in southern Lebanon and ensuring the effective implementation of Hezbollah's disarmament.
