Israel plans development of space weapons capable of striking targets on Earth

Israel is set to develop offensive space capabilities, including weapons designed to strike targets on Earth from space, as part of the Defense Ministry's multiyear budget plan for the space sector. This ambitious initiative also includes systems to defend Israeli satellites from hostile spacecraft, aiming to bolster Israel's strategic position in the domain.

The Defense Ministry's plan focuses on several key areas. Firstly, it seeks to expand the Israel Defense Forces' intelligence collection capabilities from space, enabling round-the-clock operations in all weather conditions and across multiple locations. Secondly, it aims to establish broad, resilient, and continuous communications systems for the defense establishment. A dedicated budget will specifically support offensive space operations, targeting both the protection of Israeli satellites and the development of Earth-striking weapons.

The development process involves collaboration between the Directorate of Defense Research and Development (MAFAT), the IDF, and Israel's defense industries. "Operation Roaring Lion" has significantly accelerated these efforts, as the Defense Ministry and IDF expanded their use of satellites for precise intelligence gathering, strengthening their ability to build target banks during the conflict. Defense Minister Israel Katz has emphasized the need for a rapid upgrade in space capabilities to gain an advantage over adversaries and position Israel among the top five global space powers.

Avi Berger, head of the Defense Ministry's Space Directorate, highlighted the "significant leap forward" made during "Operation Roaring Lion" and noted the success of the Ofek 13 and Ofek 19 SAR satellites, which offer advanced radar imaging technology. This strategic investment underscores Israel's commitment to leveraging space technology for national security and maintaining a technological edge.
