Israel receives first KC-46 aircraft from US, boosting options for independent strikes on Iran

Israel has received its first KC-46 midair refueling aircraft from the United States, a delivery that significantly enhances the Israeli Air Force's capabilities for potential long-range strikes. The aircraft, designated "Gideon" within the Israeli Air Force, is the first of at least six, and possibly eight, such planes procured by the Defense Ministry.

IDF Lt. Col. A stated that the KC-46, which can carry 15% more fuel and offers double the refueling capacity per flight compared to its predecessor, would have substantially increased the air force's range during the recent Iran war. The new aircraft provides the air force with a much greater ability to operate and strike targets anywhere necessary throughout the Middle East.

This delivery is seen as a potential game-changer, granting Israel greater independence in deciding whether to strike adversaries like Iran, its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, or the Yemen Houthis. This strategic autonomy is particularly important as future U.S. administrations might not always align with Israeli security interests or may even oppose such strikes.

While Israel has historically possessed midair refueling capabilities, they have been limited. The KC-46 significantly expands these capabilities, enabling Israeli F-35s, F-16s, and F-15s to conduct missions to targets as far as 2,000 kilometers away. Although the air force has developed fast take-off capabilities for closer Iranian targets, this new refueling capacity allows for greater flexibility and endurance, crucial for missions where delays or complications might arise.
