Israel's Negev officially recognized as international wine region

A significant milestone has been achieved for Israeli viticulture as the Negev Desert has officially earned international recognition as a distinct wine region. This designation, carrying the protected geographical indication "Negev," places the region on par with globally celebrated wine areas such as Champagne, Chianti, Bordeaux, and Napa Valley.

As someone who made aliyah from Colombia and has spent many years advancing regional development and economic growth in the Negev, I see wine tourism as a modern and meaningful expression of contemporary Zionism.

The achievement is the culmination of a four-year effort spearheaded by the Merage Foundation Israel. Their research has underscored the unique characteristics of wines produced in the Negev, validating its place on the international wine map. This recognition is anticipated to significantly bolster wine tourism in the region and elevate the overall global perception and market position of Israel's burgeoning wine industry.

Nicole Hod Stroh, Executive Director of the Merage Foundation Israel, expressed the personal significance of this achievement, viewing wine tourism in the Negev as a modern manifestation of Zionism and a driver for regional development.
