Israel says Iran has launched missiles towards Jordan

The United States Embassy in Jordan issued a warning to its citizens, advising them to stay away from air and sea ports in the southern city of Aqaba. This alert was issued Sunday afternoon local time, citing a "specific and credible threat," and followed days of sustained attacks by Iran on the Middle Eastern kingdom.

Confusion arose as Jordan's state news agency, quoting a government spokesperson, initially stated that neither Aqaba airport nor port had been evacuated and no threats were detected. However, approximately two hours after the US warning, the Israeli military confirmed detecting incoming Iranian missiles. Aqaba's airport is situated just kilometers from the Jordan-Israel border and the southern Israeli city of Eilat.

Later on Sunday, Jordan announced via its state news agency that it had successfully shot down three missiles, while a fourth landed in a remote area. The report indicated there were no injuries or "material damage." Jordan is a close US ally in the region, with American military personnel operating from bases across the country. Two American soldiers were killed and a third went missing in Iranian attacks over the weekend.

Video circulating on social media, unverified by ABC, reportedly showed attacks on the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, about 100 kilometers east of Amman. Iran has stated that US bases and soldiers operating in the Persian Gulf and beyond are legitimate targets following consecutive days of American attacks on the Islamic Republic. US Central Command confirmed that Iranian surveillance systems and missile and drone storage sites were hit in the latest strikes. Iranian state media, citing the country's atomic energy agency, reported that the US had struck a site for a nuclear power plant under construction in the Darkhovin region.
