Israeli Airstrikes in Gaza Kill Eight Amidst Ceasefire Talks

At least eight people died in Israeli airstrikes that targeted multiple residential buildings in the Gaza Strip overnight into Sunday. The strikes hit several buildings, with authorities reporting casualties including a married couple and children.

The Israeli military stated that one of the strikes eliminated a member of the Palestinian militant group Hamas. They identified the individual as Sálim Jamal Abd ar-Rahmán Abú Labad, described as a leader of a terrorist cell from the Nuchba elite unit who participated in the October 7th incursion into Israel. Another strike reportedly killed Muhammad Abd an-Násir Muhammad Chatíb, identified by the IDF as a Hamas commander.

These military actions occurred despite Hamas announcing on Friday its agreement to a ceasefire plan. This proposal, reportedly backed by U.S. President Donald Trump, includes provisions for disarmament and the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. However, Israel has not officially responded to this latest proposal. A political source told AFP that "no withdrawal will occur under any circumstances" without "actual disarmament" by Hamas.
