Israeli film on October 7 massacre selected for Toronto festival amid boycott concerns

Avi Nesher's latest film, 'Our Loves,' which delves into characters' experiences during the October 7 massacre, is set to be showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). This prestigious North American festival is considered a crucial platform for launching films internationally.

The film will be featured in TIFF's Centerpiece section, highlighting outstanding international films that have already garnered global recognition. The inclusion of an Israeli film at this time was met with praise from industry insiders, particularly as major entertainment companies FOX Entertainment Studios and Access Entertainment have joined as co-producers. Access Entertainment has a track record of producing acclaimed films, including the Oscar-winning 'The Zone of Interest.'

'Our Loves' was initially produced by Israel-based companies United King Films and SIPUR, alongside Artomas Communications and Zoa Films. The addition of international partners is seen as a vital move to overcome an informal but impactful boycott targeting Israeli cinema, especially films presented in Hebrew that tell distinctly Israeli stories.

This announcement follows the recent Ophir Awards nominations, where 'Our Loves' secured 12 nods, including for best picture, director, and screenplay. The film, Nesher's 21st, draws inspiration from real events, a characteristic of his celebrated career. It follows seven characters whose lives intersect as they navigate personal struggles and the harrowing events of October 7, revealing hidden truths and insights.
