Israeli Man, Four Palestinians Killed in West Bank Violence

Violence flared in the occupied West Bank on Friday, resulting in the deaths of an Israeli man and four Palestinians. The Israeli victim, in his thirties, was killed near the settlement of Havat Gilad during what the Israeli army described as an attack on Israeli hikers. Soldiers responding to the scene reportedly engaged with assailants who then opened fire on the civilians.

According to the Israeli army, the attackers seized a weapon from a security force member who arrived at the scene before shooting at the hikers. Two other individuals, in their twenties, sustained gunshot wounds and were evacuated by helicopter, one in serious condition. Israeli forces established roadblocks and fired at fleeing assailants, according to an AFP journalist at the scene.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian Ministry of Health reported that four Palestinians were killed in the nearby village of Tel, with four others injured, three of them seriously. The violence has intensified tensions in the region, prompting a strong reaction from Israeli leadership.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement vowing his government would act "with determination against terrorists and their sponsors." He announced plans for a meeting with security officials to "discuss the modalities of the response to the deadly attack." Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called on the army to act "with an iron fist" against "the village of the murderers and its surroundings."
