Israeli pause on strikes in Gaza suspends deadly hunt for October 7 terrorists

In a significant shift from its previous hunt-and-kill operations, Israeli troops captured a Hamas terrorist involved in the October 7, 2023, attacks while he was attempting to enter Gaza with a permit for private sector goods. The member of Hamas's elite Nukhba Force was apprehended at the Kerem Shalom Crossing after arriving in a truck to collect the goods.

This capture marks a departure from the intense special operations led by the military and Shin Bet security agency over the past three years. These operations were dedicated to eliminating every Palestinian terrorist believed to have participated in the October 7 atrocities, which claimed the lives of some 1,200 people and resulted in 251 hostages being taken.

Israeli security forces, through a joint unit dubbed Nili, have meticulously identified and eliminated thousands of Gazans allegedly involved in the massacre. They compiled a list using extensive video and photographic evidence, including footage captured by the terrorists themselves, processed through facial recognition software. According to Israeli officials, this list also includes Hamas leaders involved in orchestrating the attack. Of the estimated 5,000 individuals believed to have planned or participated in the October 7 events, around 2,800 have been confirmed killed by the military, with another 300 alleged perpetrators currently awaiting judgment in Israel.
