Israeli Premier League season opens with goals and fan violence

The Israeli Premier League season began with a mix of on-field action and off-field concerns, as fan violence marred the opening matches. While several teams were absent due to participation in European competitions, those that played provided goals and drama.

Incidents of fan violence were reported outside stadiums following a couple of games, leading to some supporters needing medical attention. Teams have issued condemnations, but the police and league face scrutiny to address these issues, which could overshadow a season expected to break attendance records.

In one of the opening fixtures, Maccabi Haifa secured a 2-1 victory over Hapoel Ramat Gan. Bruninho scored both goals for Haifa, with his first being a spectacular long-range strike in the 22nd minute. Hapoel Ramat Gan managed to pull one back through Maxim Plakushenko in the 61st minute, but Haifa held on for the win.

Maccabi Haifa coach Barak Bachar acknowledged the win but noted areas for improvement. "It was a good game for us, and we scored a goal in each half. We shouldn’t have conceded, and we were under pressure near the end, but we moved to three central defenders that helped us out," he said.

Meanwhile, Maccabi Tel Aviv dominated Hapoel Jerusalem with a 5-2 win, highlighted by a hat trick from Dor Peretz. This victory sets Maccabi Tel Aviv up for their UEFA Conference League second-leg match.
