Israeli strikes hit Lebanon killing 11 despite ceasefire

Southern Lebanon was subjected to intense Israeli airstrikes, reportedly killing at least 11 people, just hours after a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah was announced. The Lebanese state news agency detailed that Israeli warplanes, drones, and artillery struck over a dozen locations, with many strikes concentrated near the city of Nabatieh.

The Israeli military confirmed it targeted "Hezbollah targets" in retaliation for the group launching more than 50 projectiles toward Israeli forces. This escalation follows Lebanon's involvement in the broader conflict after Hezbollah fired rockets into Israel in March, a move described as retaliation for a strike that killed Iran's supreme leader.

International reactions have been mixed, with Washington criticizing Israel's continued operations. The U.S. fears that escalating tensions could jeopardize a peace deal with Iran, which includes a commitment to cease hostilities on all fronts. Tehran insists that Lebanon must be part of any comprehensive agreement to end the conflict. U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff is reportedly heading to Switzerland for initial talks with Iran.

Despite international pressure, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces domestic demands to maintain military action against Hezbollah. Hezbollah, in turn, has vowed to continue its attacks if Israel's operations in southern Lebanon persist. The White House previously criticized Israel's military operation, warning it risks undermining the peace deal, though President Donald Trump publicly praised Netanyahu as a "warrior."
