Istanbul MP Nimet Özdemir Resigns from CHP

Istanbul Member of Parliament Nimet Özdemir resigned from the Republican People's Party (CHP) on October 8, 2024, just months after joining the party. She had previously resigned from the İYİ Party on July 24, 2024, citing a severed connection.

Özdemir, who served as an İYİ Party lawmaker for Istanbul, initially left her party stating, "I have resigned because I have severed my connection with the İYİ Party." She then continued her parliamentary duties as an independent before joining the CHP on October 8, 2024. CHP Chairman Özgür Özel personally presented her with the party's badge during a group meeting in parliament.

Before her party switches, Özdemir was a founding member of the İYİ Party in 2017. Within the party, she held various positions, including provincial and district delegate, district executive in Ümraniye, and deputy chair responsible for animal rights and NGOs. She was elected as an Istanbul lawmaker in the 28th parliamentary term.

Özdemir has been active in parliamentary commissions, serving on the Environment Commission, the EU Harmonization Commission, and the Turkey-EU Joint Parliamentary Commission. She is currently a member of the Environment Commission representing the CHP. Notably, she has championed animal rights, submitting legislative proposals to increase prison sentences for animal abuse and killing.
