Italian Football Federation Withdraws Support for FIFA President Infantino

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has announced it will not support Gianni Infantino's bid for re-election as FIFA president in 2027. This decision marks a significant shift, aligning Italy with UEFA and its president, Aleksander Čeferin.

The FIGC cited "clear and transparent" reasons for its withdrawal of support, highlighting differences in opinion regarding the governance of international football. Specific points of contention include the development of the football calendar and the structure of international competitions.

"We will continue to work together with UEFA and the other European federations to promote an idea of football based on merit, solidarity, sustainability, and the centrality of the fans," stated FIGC President Giovanni Malagò. This move signals a growing divergence within European football regarding Infantino's leadership.

Infantino, who seeks to renew his mandate as head of world football's governing body, faces increasing distance from European football authorities. The Italian federation's decision further underscores these internal divisions.
