Italian Grand Prix resumes after Leclerc crashes out

The Italian Formula One Grand Prix turned into a Ferrari nightmare when Charles Leclerc crashed heavily at Parabolica at the end of the second lap.

Leclerc, who started third, spun after coming under pressure from McLaren's Oscar Piastri. Television replays showed wheelspin, contact with the white line at the edge of the track and a high-speed departure from the circuit. Ferrari said the Monegasque driver was fine after visiting the Monza medical centre. He had climbed out of the car and sat behind the barriers immediately after the crash.

The safety car appeared before officials brought out the red flags on lap four. The race resumed after a half-hour delay while the tyre wall was rebuilt, with Mercedes' George Russell leading the field. The first restart had to be aborted because Racing Bulls stand-in driver Yuki Tsunoda was incorrectly positioned on the grid.

Leclerc's teammate Lewis Hamilton had started fourth beside him. Hamilton tried to pass on the inside at the first corner, ran wide into the gravel and fell to 11th. “Charles pushed me off,” he complained over the team radio, in an incident noted by the stewards. The disruption unfolded at Ferrari's home race in front of a record crowd at Monza.
