Italian Investigative Journalist Loses TV Show After Car Bomb Attack

Investigative journalist Sigfrido Ranucci, known for his work on the Rai program "Report," will no longer host the show starting in November. The public broadcaster announced that Giulia Presutti and Daniele Piervincenzi will take over the program.

This decision comes after a car bomb exploded outside Ranucci's home near Rome in October. The attack, which destroyed his and his daughter's car, fortunately resulted in no injuries. Ranucci, who has faced threats for years and was under police protection, became a symbol of press freedom following the incident.

The investigation into the bombing led to the arrest of Valter Lavitola, a businessman and former confidant of Silvio Berlusconi. Lavitola, who has confessed to ordering the attack, claims his motive was to help Ranucci. He reportedly told investigators he wanted Ranucci's police protection increased.

Italian media reports suggest Lavitola may have staged the attack to boost Ranucci's popularity, potentially to launch him into politics to run against Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Lavitola allegedly commissioned polls and discussed the idea with senior journalists.

The close relationship between Ranucci and Lavitola has fueled speculation across Italy. While journalists often maintain contact with sources, Ranucci and Lavitola have publicly described a deep connection. The central question remains whether Ranucci was manipulated or was aware of Lavitola's alleged plan for a fake attack.
