Italian Local Elections: Conte and Renzi Campaign in Puglia as National Politics Intertwine

The final hours before Italy's electoral silence transformed Puglia into a stage for national politics. In Molfetta, the leader of the Five Star Movement, Giuseppe Conte, threw his support behind Manuel Minervini, a 36-year-old engineer running for mayor. Conte presented Minervini as the face of a new generation of administrators, emphasizing shared values like administrative quality, seriousness, public ethics, and urban regeneration. "We have the chance, with this project, here in Molfetta, to turn the page with a generational leap and try to bring good politics," Conte stated.

The campaign events, however, quickly shifted from local issues to national and international affairs. Conte seized the opportunity to directly criticize Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. He accused her of seeking to appease Donald Trump and being sidelined by him, and of aligning with a military victory strategy for Europe and NATO against Russia, only to be excluded from a recent summit with Germany, the UK, and France. Conte further questioned Italy's standing, sarcastically asking if Matteo Salvini was piloting the plane when Italy missed a crucial EU-Balkans summit, implying Italy had fallen low.

These remarks by Conte inevitably drew attention away from the municipal contests and toward the national political confrontation. The Puglia runoffs are clearly being observed by parties as a testing ground that extends beyond individual municipalities. In Trani, Matteo Renzi joined the campaign for Marco Galiano, a center-left candidate seeking to retain leadership. The presence of national figures underscores the strategic importance these local races hold for the major Italian political parties.
