Italian student in Barcelona assault opens eyes, squeezes mother's hand

Nicola Maggiotto, a 21-year-old from Asolo, Italy, has shown positive signs of recovery after being assaulted in Barcelona. He opened his eyes and was able to look at his parents, even squeezing his mother's hand. The family's lawyer, Monica Cornaviera, confirmed the encouraging developments.

Maggiotto had been in intensive care at the Hospital del Mar in Barcelona since an attack that occurred between August 12 and 13. While he is still partially sedated, the medication has been reduced in anticipation of a full awakening. Nurses interpreted his initial movements, like leg and arm motions, as positive signals.

The young man's awakening became more apparent when his father moved a chair, prompting Nicola to open his eyes and turn his gaze toward him. He has also been taken off the assisted breathing tube and is now breathing independently. Despite these positive steps, medical staff emphasize that considerable patience will be required for his complete recovery.
