Italians claim: Modrić stays in Milan, signing date known. He also made a big decision about the national team

Croatian national team captain Luka Modrić is set to continue his career with AC Milan, according to Italian media reports. The experienced midfielder is expected to sign a new contract with the Italian club on Wednesday, July 22.

After a period of rest with his family and disappointment over Croatia's exit from the World Cup, Modrić has reportedly decided to extend his stay at the San Siro. His previous contract officially expired on June 30, as Milan did not exercise an option for a unilateral extension. The 40-year-old Croatian midfielder has agreed to remain under the same financial conditions, reportedly earning 3.5 million euros net per season, plus bonuses. His role on the field may also see adjustments under new coach Rubén Amorim, who considers Modrić vital for both his on-field quality and locker room influence. However, his playing time is expected to be managed more carefully to keep him fresh throughout the season.

Italian media suggest Modrić chose to stay with Milan because he did not want his tenure at the club to end after a season where the team failed to qualify for the Champions League, despite leading the league for much of the season.

In addition to his club future, reports from Milan Vibes indicate Modrić has also made a decision regarding his international career. He has allegedly agreed with the new Croatian coach, Slaven Bilić, to retire from the national team after an upcoming Nations League match against Spain on October 6. These reports, however, have not yet been officially confirmed by the Croatian Football Federation or Modrić himself. Modrić has made over 200 appearances for the national team during his career.
