Italy: Clashes Erupt at Protests Following Fatal Police Violence

Protests and clashes with police have occurred across Italy following the death of Abderrahim Fakir, a 42-year-old man, during a police operation in Bologna. Thousands gathered in the city center for a demonstration, holding signs demanding "Truth and Justice" and calling for an explanation of the events that led to Fakir's death.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that after an initially peaceful rally, some participants threw bottles and Molotov cocktails at the police. Reports indicate that police vehicles' window guards were torn off, prompting officers to deploy water cannons and tear gas. At least eleven people, including both demonstrators and police officers, were injured, according to emergency services.

Fakir died on Sunday in Bologna. Video footage shows him being held face down on the ground by two police officers, his hands cuffed behind his back. He repeatedly cries out "Help! Enough, enough!" before becoming unresponsive. A medical examiner later pronounced him dead. Initial reports suggest police were called to the scene due to Fakir experiencing a rage episode, with Italian media describing it as a psychiatric crisis. Fakir, who was of Moroccan descent and had lived in Italy since childhood, managed a cleaning company and shared an apartment with his brother in Bologna. The right-wing government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has pledged "complete transparency" in the investigation into Fakir's death. The Lega party has defended the police's actions.
