Italy Dominates Mediterranean Games, Especially in Swimming

Italy is asserting dominance at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto, with its athletes, particularly swimmers, achieving significant success. After a slow start, the "Azzurri" have surged, claiming six of the nine gold medals awarded on a single day, contributing to a total of 13 medals out of the 22 won by the nation that day.

This performance has propelled Italy to the top of the overall medal standings with 35 medals, including 13 golds, 16 silvers, and 6 bronzes. The nation holds a substantial lead over second-place Turkey, which has 19 medals, and third-place Greece with 13.

The swimming events have been a major source of Italy's success, with athletes securing medals in nearly every race they entered. Gold medals were won by Costanza Cocconcelli in the women's 50m backstroke, Alberto Razzetti in the men's 100m butterfly, Jacopo Barbotti in the 200m freestyle, Lisa Angiolini in the 200m breaststroke, and Luca De Tullio in the 800m freestyle. The mixed 4x100m medley relay team also secured a gold.

Beyond the pool, Italy also celebrated victories in canoeing, with Elena Voltan and Samuele Veglianti winning gold medals. Sara Bongini clinched a thrilling skeet shooting gold after a close contest. "It was a beautiful competition, I managed to take this gold medal after a great qualification," said Bongini, dedicating her win to a late friend. Other medals came from Greco-Roman wrestling and kayak events, though the taekwondo team finished with three fifth places.
