Italy reportedly close to appointing Pirlo as new head coach

Italy is reportedly on the verge of appointing Andrea Pirlo as its new head coach, with an official announcement anticipated before the weekend concludes, according to One Football.

Pirlo has emerged as the leading candidate to succeed Gennaro Gattuso, following reports that high-profile managers Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti turned down the opportunity to lead the four-time world champions. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) had initially pursued other ambitious candidates, with technical director Paolo Maldini and special advisor Leonardo reportedly approaching Ancelotti and then Guardiola, neither of whom expressed interest.

Guardiola's decision was reportedly influenced by factors beyond finances, including a desire for an extended break from management after a decade at Manchester City and a wish to prioritize family time. He was reportedly seeking an annual salary of around EUR 20 million, significantly exceeding the FIGC's budget.

With Guardiola and Ancelotti unavailable, the FIGC shifted its focus to Pirlo, who is currently managing UAE Pro League club United FC. Reports suggest that terminating his existing contract should not impede his appointment to the national team. Pirlo is expected to sign a contract through the 2030 World Cup, with an annual salary of approximately EUR 1.5 million, considerably less than what was reportedly sought by other top managers.

Despite a mixed managerial record, including a Coppa Italia win with Juventus and stints with Turkish and Italian second-division clubs, Pirlo is viewed by Maldini and Leonardo as a suitable long-term choice. His strong relationships within the football community and admiration for his former mentor Ancelotti are understood to have bolstered his position.
