Italy's Chamber of Deputies Dedicates Seat to Slain Anti-Fascist Matteotti Amidst Political Squabble

The Italian Chamber of Deputies has permanently dedicated seat number 14 to the memory of Giacomo Matteotti, a socialist parliamentarian whose 1924 speech denouncing fascist violence led to his abduction and murder. This seat, located in the front row, will no longer be reassigned. President Lorenzo Fontana honored Matteotti as a "valiant man" who "accused the Mussolini government of being based on the systematic use of violence." He proposed a moment of silence, which concluded with bipartisan applause. However, the ceremony was overshadowed by a noticeable absence of lawmakers from the majority party, particularly from Fratelli d'Italia, in the hemicycle. This sparked crossfire accusations. Democratic Party (PD) deputy Arturo Scotto denounced the empty seats on social media, calling it "Shame." Luana Zanella, group leader for Alleanza Verdi Sinistra (Avs), questioned if the right-wing parties "are afraid to pay homage to an anti-fascist." A rebuttal from Fratelli d'Italia dismissed the criticism, stating their presence was adequate and suggesting the left should examine its own attendance. Amidst these disputes, Andrea Casu, a PD deputy involved in a separate incident, criticized the situation, stating he was "disqualified for anti-fascism on the day the Chamber of Deputies dedicates a plaque to Giacomo Matteotti." Representatives from across the political spectrum, including Avs, FdI, Pd, Lega, Forza Italia, and others, participated in remembering the assassinated deputy. The plaque itself reads: "From this seat, socialist deputy Giacomo Matteotti delivered the historic speech of May 30, 1924, in defense of the free Parliament and against fascist intimidation and violence, which would cost him his life." Fontana described the act as a "further and due homage to his memory," adding that "today's democratic society is the child of the courageous choices of those who preceded us." The plaque's installation followed an order of the day presented by Avs deputy Devis Dori and unanimously approved by the presidency.
