Italy's Longest-Serving Government Celebrates Milestone, Eyes Mediterranean Role

Italy's government is set to mark a historic milestone, becoming the longest-serving administration in the republic's history. To commemorate over 1,413 days in office, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will host a gathering in Bari on September 4, a city symbolizing Italy's connection to the Mediterranean.

The event is strategically positioned to project Italy's influence towards the Balkans, the Middle East, and Africa. Deputy Health Minister Marcello Gemmato explained that the celebration in Bari underscores the Meloni government's success in reasserting Italy's international standing. This includes strengthening ties with neighboring countries, such as Albania under Prime Minister Edi Rama, and advancing the 'Mattei Plan' aimed at fostering cooperation with African nations.

The fundamental idea is to celebrate this record in a position of projection towards the Middle East, towards Africa and the Balkans, affirming the Meloni government's ability to have reaffirmed Italy's role at an international level.

The 'Mattei Plan' seeks to encourage African populations to remain in their home countries by creating opportunities, rather than compelling them to migrate due to economic pressures. Gemmato emphasized that the government's strategy focuses on cooperation to enable people to stay and freely choose whether to move to Europe.

Preparations for the event are underway, with plans for an afternoon start to avoid the late summer heat, followed by speeches from ministers and the Prime Minister in the evening. Thousands of supporters are expected to attend, requiring significant logistical arrangements in Bari's port area. Prime Minister Meloni is also scheduled to visit Puglia for a vacation and to inaugurate the Mediterranean Games in Taranto.
