Italy’s Po River Valley on Drought Alert

Italy's Po Valley, the nation's longest river basin, is now on high drought alert, authorities announced Thursday. Unfavorable weather forecasts and worsening conditions have prompted the elevated status, impacting more than 100 municipalities in the northern regions of Piedmont and Lombardy.

These areas are already struggling with water supply. Some communities are forced to use tanker trucks to refill drinking water reservoirs. Water levels in Lake Maggiore and Lake Como have dropped significantly in just one week, by 7 percent and 6 percent respectively. These lakes had previously supplied irrigation water to the valley's fields during the dry winter months.

The region is experiencing an unusually early summer, with June and July bringing record heat that melted vital snow reserves. Climatologists from the World Weather Attribution group state that the June heatwave across Europe would have been almost impossible without climate change. Twenty river basins in the north are already permitted to bypass minimum water flow regulations to prevent a devastating drought like the one experienced in 2022.

Alessandro Delpiano, Secretary General of the Po River Authority (ADBPO), cautioned against optimism regarding recent rainfall. "Let's not fool ourselves into thinking that summer storms can solve deep-rooted problems," he stated. Despite brief periods of rain, northern Italy's lakes and rivers hold less water now than they did ten days prior.
