Jackie Nava to release AI-enhanced documentary "Fists of Hope"

Mexican world champion boxer Jackie Nava, a trailblazer in women's boxing, is set to release a documentary titled "Puños de esperanza" (Fists of Hope), which incorporates Artificial Intelligence in its storytelling. The film, nearing the end of its post-production phase, is slated for an initial presentation by the end of the year, followed by a festival run and a commercial cinema release.

Gabriel Reyes, who worked on the visual effects for the Oscar-nominated film "Sueño de trenes," is directing the documentary. AI technology has been employed to encapsulate the legend of the "Aztec Princess," as Nava is known, by merging motion capture with real-life performances and digitally recreating Nava's daughter as a child.

Nava expressed her desire to share her personal stories and highlight the positive aspects of Tijuana, her hometown, which she describes as a place with significant talent and discipline despite its conflicts. "I wanted to tell my stories and also tell the beautiful face of Tijuana where there are many conflicts, but much talent and discipline," Nava stated. "This is a project that has been several months in the making and is already using new technology."

The documentary covers Nava's entire life. While a traditional approach to depicting her story was considered, the high cost led the production team to explore AI. "The documentary is not usually thought of as a contribution to innovation, but we said we had to give technology a chance," said director Reyes. He explained that their developers created a unique technique that made the AI implementation accessible, addressing concerns about the high cost and environmental impact of some AI systems. They are proposing a "Personal AI" system that uses local installations powered by renewable energy instead of cloud-based solutions.

"Puños de esperanza" features interviews with former boxers Julio César Chávez and "El Terrible" Morales, who influenced Nava's career, as well as her mother and young Mexican athlete Gil Mora. The film also plans to offer an immersive experience in Mexican schools, allowing students to virtually visit Nava's training gym.
