Jackie, the famous California bald eagle, dies after weeks of intensive care

Jackie, a bald eagle beloved by thousands worldwide who followed her life via a live nest cam in California's Big Bear Valley, has died. The Ojai Raptor Center announced her passing on Monday, following weeks of intensive veterinary treatment.

Over the past several days, her condition continued to deteriorate despite intensive treatment and the combined efforts of our veterinary team and consulting specialists.

The eagle, who hatched in the spring of 2012, was attacked by other eagles, leading to her admission to the wildlife rehabilitation center. Compounding the trauma of the attack, Jackie also suffered from underlying health issues that resulted in anemia and significant weight loss. Despite the dedicated efforts of the veterinary team and consulting specialists, her condition continued to deteriorate over the past several days.

Jackie and her mate, Shadow, had been together since 2018. Their nest, featured on the Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam run by the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley, attracted hundreds of thousands of subscribers who closely followed the pair's life. The center stated, "Our team is heartbroken. It has been an extraordinary privilege to care for her."

The Ojai Raptor Center acknowledged the widespread grief expected from Jackie's global fanbase. "We know this news will be deeply felt by the many thousands of people around the world who have followed her journey, hoped alongside us, prayed for her, and supported the people caring for her," the statement read. The center is collaborating with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to provide a more comprehensive statement regarding Jackie's treatments and test results. Her remains have been transferred to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
